Huge chunks of Antarctic ice turn up in a surprising place — and hundreds more could be on the way.

More than 100, and possibly hundreds, of Antarctic icebergs are floating towards New Zealand in a rare event which has prompted a shipping warning, officials said on Monday.

An Australian Antarctic Division glaciologist said the ice chunks, spotted by satellite photography, had passed the Auckland Islands and were heading towards the main South Island, about 450 kilometres (280 miles) northeast.

U.S stock futures point to a higher opening Monday morning as traders perceive stock market as the most viable option for short term return in comparison to other alternative investment avenues in the present uncertain circumstances despite lingering doubts about sustaining viable recovery in the medium term.

Rising commodity prices and positive trading in other markets might also lift sentiment. Traders may also focus on the existing home sales report for clues on the housing sector. Volumes are expected to be relatively thin on shortened week of trading.

As of 6.15 am ET, the Dow futures were up 90.00 points, the S&P futures were up 11.10 points, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 futures were up 16.50 points.
